Protect Your Pensions
Immediate Help Needed!
In the next 24 hours the General Assembly could pass a budget amendment that will take 5% of your pay away from you. This budget amendment affects all CURRENT employees. Localities are licking their chops in anticipation of using you, their employees to help balance their budgets. The General Assembly says its wrong to raise taxes, and a lot of localities have said the same, so why it ok to tax you, an employee. Our members have already taken cuts to their pay in the form of insurance premium hikes and inflation and most have not gotten a pay raise in years.
I have heard our retirement referred to as a Cadillac plan, when in reality we are one of the lowest in the nation. A study done last year also compared our pay to other comparable states but not neighboring states which have higher pay. Even North Carolina has better retirement than Virginia. The study also found that our pay is 15-20% lower than private sector jobs without the retirement factored in.
We have come under attack and we need your help to stop it. Please call all your friends, other public employees in youe area, neighbors, anyone you think will help and have everyone call their representative in the General Assembly, and ask that they stop their attack on your retirement. We have LESS than 24 hours to get this done, so it needs to be done today.
CALL YOUR STATE SENATOR and DELEGATE NOW!!!! EMAIL YOUR DELEGATE OR SENATOR NOW!!!!

FIRE OPS 101
The 5th District of the Virginia Professional Firefighters (Chesterfield, Henrico, Hanover, New Kent, Caroline, Petersburg, Hopewell, Colonial Heights, Prince George) are planning a FIRE OPS 101 class for February 2010. This class is conducted to educate our Board of Supervisors, State Delegates, State Senators, Congress, and Senate about our profession. It includes live burns, EMS scenarios, Haz Mat, and other technical knowledge of our profession. This daylong event requires a large cadre of instructors, administrators, and behind the scenes assistants that can talk the talk and walk the walk. Our local is looking for politically savy members to help with this event. If you are interested, please contact Local 1568 President Stephen Pignatello. If you have any questions about FIRE OPS 101, go to the IAFF Website. http://www.iaff.org/et/fireops101/purpose-main.htm

Proposed EMS Regulations
Governor Tim Kaine has signed the proposed EMS Regulations and now they can move forward in the process to public forum/comments. This timeframe will be about 60 days and includes numerous public comment locations throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Virginia Professional Firefighters leadership has spent months helping the EMS Advisory Board make proposed changes to these regulation and needs our help. We are asking all professional firefighters to support the EMS regulations as proposed and come to the public forums to voice this support in the next few months. Many of the changes were made to clean up outdated items within the regulations or unfair practices. Gary Samuels, the VPFF Represenative on the EMS Advisory Board, will keep everyone informed when the time is near. The final step of this process will be to get the Regulations approved and submitted for the signature of Governor Elect - Bob McDonnell sometime next year.
